The Trail

In the summer of 1877, several bands of the Nez Perce Tribe (Nee-Me-Poo) defended themselves in a protracted military campaign with the United States government. This campaign lasted for four months, beginning in Oregon and Idaho, and culminating with the surrender of many Nez Perce at the Bear's Paw Battlefield in Northern Montana. The route that the Nez Perce followed from Oregon to Montana was designated as the Nez Perce National Historic Trail (Public Law 99-445) by the U.S. Congress on October 6, 1986 and joined a growing list of National Historic Trails. The USDA Forest Service was assigned primary administration responsibility for the trail. As provided for by congress, the Nez Perce National Historic Trail Foundation was created on July 19, 1991 to act as a partner, and volunteer group for the Forest Service. Other partners are; the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, State Agencies, local governments, the Chief Joseph Band, Colville Reservation, Nespelem Washington, and the Nez Perce Tribe in Lapwai, Idaho.

In its 1,170-mile quest toward Canada, from Wallowa Lake, Oregon to the Bear Paws Mountains in northern Montana, the NPNHT passes through the states of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana and crosses tribal, private, county, State, and Federal lands.
